Campbell County Public Schools (CCPS) released a mitigation plan for the 21-22 school year in late July based upon the Virginia Department of Health’s Back to School mitigation framework. The CCPS School Board highly recommended masks while indoors; however, masks were optional in the original plan.
On August 4, the CDC released updated guidance related to masks, which indicates that all individuals indoors during school settings should wear a face covering regardless of vaccination status. On August 5, Governor Northam issued a statement indicating that all schools would comply with CDC guidance for masking in accordance with state law. CCPS sought guidance from the School Board Attorney and the CCPS insurance carrier. Both entities indicated that CCPS must follow CDC guidance in this matter.
Based upon these developments:
Campbell County Public Schools will require masks for all individuals inside of schools regardless of vaccination status. This order goes into effect at 7:00AM on August 12, 2021, and will remain in effect until a change in mitigation guidance is warranted. Please note this includes the Open House events on August 12, 2021.
CCPS is committed to delivering the best educational opportunities to our students as possible. We realize that masking is unpopular and hope to rescind this order as soon as conditions improve, and it is legally possible.
